Why do we have ear wax?

This is one of the questions we are most often asked. Wax is not a result of poor hygiene as many people think – it is produced by the ear to trap dirt and lubricate the skin. It also provides anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties – ensuring the ear is kept healthy.

Ear wax usually moves naturally out of the ears as we talk, chew and yawn and some people will never be affected by a build up, but for others it can be a real problem.

How should I clean my ears?

The best way to clean the ears is to use a warm washcloth when in the shower, and gently clean the outer ear up to the opening of the ear canal only. NEVER use cotton buds as you could damage your ears. They also may compact the ear wax – making it impossible to come out in the usual way. Also, using cotton buds stimulates the ear canal to produce more wax and exacerbates the problem!

When enough is enough.

In itself ear wax isn’t a problem, but if left to build up and become impacted, it can cause many symptoms including:

  • Earache
  • Reduced Hearing
  • Tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
  • Dizziness
  • Coughing Reflex
  • Hearing aids stop working or squeal
  • Skin irritation.
  • Trapped water and infection

Why Us?

It can take a long time to get an appointment with a GP or practice nurse to have wax removed; indeed many GP practices no longer offer the service.

As you would expect our approach to clearing your ears leaves nothing to chance, employing the safest methods and sterile hygienic equipment.

We offer ear wax removal using either microsuction or electronic irrigation (sometimes known as ear syringing). To find out more, please see our information boxes below:

Ear wax removal by micro-suction is a gentle, pain-free process that uses a fine, low pressure suction pump to safely remove ear wax from blocked ears. A qualified audiologist will examine your ears using a video otoscope (camera). We will then show you the extent of the wax blockage (if you wish) before suction treatment and your clear ear canals after the treatment.

There is no need to apply oil for weeks before your appointment, but a few drops in the nights before your appointment are helpful to slightly soften the wax and lubricate the ear. In most cases wax can be removed in one visit, very occasionally a free follow up a few days later is required.*

We also offer wax removal by irrigation using a jet of warm water under controlled pressure to gently wash the wax out of the ears. The water is body temperature and the pump creates a whirlpool effect to gently and effectively bring the wax forwards. Our audiologist will examine the ears and show you the build up (if you wish) using a video otoscope (camera) and the clear ear canals after the treatment.

There is no need to apply oil for several days before your appointment, but a single treatment the night before is helpful to slightly soften the wax and lubricate the ear. In most cases wax can be removed in one visit, very occasionally a free follow up a few days later is required.

Our prices apply to both ears. We do not offer a ‘single ear only’ price because our ear care professionals have a duty to take the time to assess the health of both of your ears – and, if necessary, to clean them both. It is also the case that both ears tend to produce wax at the same rate even if only one ear feels blocked.
